In this presentation a brief summary of the conclusions of the European Auto-Oil Programme, which is primarily concerned with conventional transportation fuels and vehicle technologies, will be given. The impact of changes in these technologies will be discussed. Looking a little further ahead the advantages and disadvantages of some alternative fuels for transportation will be reviewed. Finally the prospects and impact of the advent of a new technology for powering vehicles will be discussed.
