Note:
An efficient formulation for the design optimization of high-performing duct-burners for combined-cycle plants is presented. The proposed methodology combines a commercial code, employed for the ow analysis, with a progressive optimization strategy, whose efficiency relies on the simultaneous convergence of both the ow solution and the optimization process, as well as on the use of progressively finer grids. The present formulation has been tested by means of the inverse design of a standard, diffusive configuration of duct-burner. In order to validate the numerical model, an experimental facility has been set up. At this stage a new premixing, non-optimal, geometry, which provides a better control of the temperature distribution with respect to the standard geometries, has been tested. The comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data shows the effectiveness of the numerical model for the ow analysis. On the other side, results on the inverse design of a standard duct-burner configuration show that a converged optimization requires a computational time corresponding to 5÷11 ow analyses, thus demonstrating that the proposed technique can be used as an efficient tool for the design optimization of duct-burners with improved performances.
