The possibility is analysed of applying two-stage compression to CO2 transcritical cycles with the purpose of getting the well known advantages that such a technique bring about in traditional cycles.
To this end a simulation model was developed that uses a computer code (REFPROP 5.0 by NIST) for evaluating the thermodynamic properties of the refrigerant. The increase in COP with respect to a single-stage cycle was determined as a function of different operating conditions and different performance of components. The effect of the following parameters was investigated: evaporation temperature, gas cooler pressure, temperature of the fluid used for heat rejection and isentropic efficiency of the compressors.
