Thermodynamic criteria and model rules in fire research

Note:
The theory of similarity is built up on the mass, momentum, energy conservations laws and leads to a set of dimensionless groups for modelling the heat and mass transfer processes in every point of a thermodynamic system in the time. Nevertheless a fundamental feature of the physical phenomena, i.e., the degree of irreversibility, cannot be established by means of the known dimensionless numbers. For modelling the irreversibility of the transfer processes we propose to include in the system of the conservation laws the entropy balance equation representing the principle of entropy increase by irreversible processes in continuous fields. Two new dimensionless groups are obtained which allows us to improve the model rules in fire research including the factors of irreversibility of the transfer processes. To verify the selected model rules physical and numerical simulations of fire accidents in a highway tunnel have been performed.
