Note:
The analysis of the energy performance of exhibition buildings has to take into account some typical characteristics of this typology, such as the discontinuous use period during a year, the high values of the internal loads due to the relevant number of users and to the electric equipments and finally the significant internal height, that could lead to thermal stratifications.
The present research aims to evaluate the energy behavior of exhibition buildings providing some guidelines for the choice of the strategies for the energy efficiency improvement, assessing the energy savings and the payback times.
The case study is the Milan trade fair. The analysis is carried out through a dynamic energy simulation model, using the software EnergyPlus. A “sample exhibition hall” was simulated firstly during one representative event in winter and one in summer to calibrate the model (comparing the energy demand resulting from the simulations to the measured energy consumption) and then during a year, considering a typical annual schedule.
Different strategies were simulated, considering both energy retrofit solutions on the envelope (such as the roof insulation and the internal/external insulation) and system management strategies (such as the variation of the set point temperature and the summer night free cooling). Finally, a simple economical evaluation was implemented to verify the payback times.
