Note:
In this work, an innovative full scale adsorption chiller is presented. The main component of the prototype is a sophisticated double-bed adsorber specifically designed to be driven by low temperature heat sources and to be compact and light. The adsorber was
realized embedding grains of the novel adsorbent FAM Z02, produced by Mitsubishi Chemical, into lightweight aluminium finned flat-tube heat exchangers in order to have a low regeneration temperature and to maximize the heat transfer area. Water was used as refrigerant. Several tests were carried out in order to measure the cooling power and the coefficient of performance of the system in typical European operating conditions. The results achieved showed that the chiller is able to produce up to 5 kW of peak cooling power at 10 °C (35 °C condensation temperature) with a COP of 0.6. The corresponding Specific Cooling Power (SCP) is as high as 550 W/kg of adsorbent that represents an excellent result if compared with values from literature.
