A 2-D thermodynamic analysis of a biomass gasification stage feeding a SOFC CHP plant

Note:
The present work deals with the analysis of the syngas production section of a 11kW (inlet power) SOFC CHP plant designed for residential applications. The system is a downdraft fixed bed gasifier coupled with a SOFC stack. Spruce sawdust has been considered as feedstock for the analysis, being widely available in the northern regions of Italy.
The steam gasification process is modeled coupling the heat and the momentum equations and solving the PDE’s problem by means of a finite elements formulation. The chemical reaction analysis has been performed implementing in the FEM model a 2-phase (gas-solid) thermodynamic solver. Several simulations have been carried out varying the steam to carbon ratio, the heating temperature and the steam temperature.
