Note:
In this paper the prototype of a high temperature TES is numerically analyzed. The proposed system is made up of a set of cubic solid elements, which receives heat by a fluid. The cubes are made of concrete. Air is employed as the heat-carrying fluid. An inlet and an outlet channels are also employed, that simulate the condition of fully developed flow for the air. The commercial CFD Fluent code is used to solve the governing equations in transient regime. Numerical simulations are carried out at different mass flow rates of the heat-carrying fluid. Results in terms of average convective heat transfer coefficient, stored thermal energy, heat transfer rate and average wall temperature as a function of the time are presented. Average convective heat transfer coefficient, stored thermal energy and fluid pressure drop after three hours as a function of the mass velocity are also reported.
