Note:
The paper presents the design and the prototyping of a small four-wheel vehicle with a mass of 800 kg powered by a gasoline engine and lead-acid batteries in a series hybrid configuration.
The components of the vehicle where chosen in order to keep low the cost of the vehicle and to assure the capability to drive in urban and extra-urban routes. The vehicle is capable to reach a maximum speed of 90 km/h in hybrid configuration. The power required to the wheels is given by a DC motor through a constant transmission ratio and a regenerating brake is used to recover the braking energy.
The vehicle is designed to move mainly in pure electric configuration while the engine is used either to recharge the batteries or to overcome the speed limits in All Electric Range. For this reason, a plug-in configuration has been considered and a charge depleting control strategy has been chosen for the vehicle.
