Note:
An innovative methodology aimed at reducing emissions and improving fuel consumption has been developed for the design of internal combustion engines. This method allows the design of new combustion chambers and injection systems by means of a fully automated procedure based on CFD simulations, Genetic Algorithms and clustering. Different engine operating conditions, i.e. load and speed values, can be considered in the design of the engine. The method was successfully applied to a wide range of engine configurations and different injection strategies were taken into account.
CFD simulations are performed with a modified version of the KIVA3V code. The spray and
autoignition models of the KIVA3V codes were modified in order to simulate the behavior of a smallbore direct injection diesel engine equipped with a common rail injection system when changing load, speed, injection strategy and EGR.
The present investigation analyzes the validity of designing diesel engines by means of evolutionary algorithms and numerical simulations. The proposed method was compared with other approach available in literature and was also validated by means of experimental tests. The results of such a comparison stressed the importance of correctly simulate the combustion process and the emissions mechanisms of formation in diesel engine before applying such methods.
