Metallic materials from Thyssenkrupp VDM have been used successfully for Flue-Gas Desulphurization Plants in Europe and world-wide for more than 20 years.
This presentation introduces these alloys, explains the typical corrosive conditions in FGDs, introduces material selection concepts and examples of metallic solutions based on the experience of the supplier of these alloys.
Corrosion problems may occur in all parts of an, starting with the booster fan, dampers, heat recovery system, raw-gas inlet, the scrubber, piping systems and ductwork to the chimney. These problems and their often expensive consequences can be avoided economically and reliably by using special stainless steels and nickel-based alloys.
The focus of this paper is on the material selection and practical examples of actual applications in existing FGDs, the advantages of metallic concepts compared to non-metallic solutions like coating and rubber linings and cost effective solutions such as hot-rolled-clad material.
