Note:
Public Power Corporation’s Meliti Echlada Electric Steam Plant is a new, 330 MW lignite coal-fired power generating station in Florina, Greece in Florina, Greece supplied by ALSTOM Power Generation. The Meliti Echlada Station is equipped with a limestone based, wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system supplied by ALSTOM Power Environmental Control Systems. The FGD system was installed to meet the emissions requirements of the European Community and was placed into service in April, 2003. The wet FGD system involves the use of a high performance, open spray absorber design that has achieved extremely high SO2 loadings. Scrubbed flue gas from the wet FGD system is discharged through the plant’s natural draft cooling tower in lieu of a chimney.
This paper provides an overview of the flue gas desulfurization process, describes specific design features of the plant including the use of a cooling tower in lieu of a chimney, and provides operating experiences and performance results obtained during start-up and testing phases of the project.
