Note:
This paper reports results obtained from an experimental investigation of a laboratory scale TES system. The TES system consists of an insulated 20 liter steel tank filled with sand trough which oil is circulated.
Measurements to determine the TES characteristics during charging using an electrically heated coiled copper tube and during discharging through another coiled copper tube immersed in a known quantity of water were carried out. The results show that the oil-sand TES system is a potential candidate for thermal energy storage to improve the effectiveness of cooking with energy from the sun. The results also suggest the viability of using low wattage electrical backup for charging the TES during prolonged unavailability of sufficient energy from the sun.
