Note:
Thermoeconomics has been proven to represent a powerful instrument for solving both cost-accounting and optimization problems as concerns energy systems. The complexity of the analysis and the structure of most thermoeconomic methodologies have been limiting their field of application to large energy systems operating in steady or just about steady conditions. However, Thermoeconomics provides an in-depth understanding of energy systems behaviour which could reveal useful in solving unusual optimization problems, for energy systems operating in unsteady conditions or with particular boundary conditions. In this paper Thermoeconomics is suggested as a reliable instrument to reduce the risk deriving from the stochastic behaviour of energy demand and prices. In order to clarify the role assumed by cost-accounting in such analyses, an appropriate case study in examined, i.e. the optimization of new repowering actions for the grid connected trigeneration systems supplying the Malpensa international airport with heating, cooling and power.
