Note:
Solar air conditioning is a sensible proposition as the need for cooling normally increases with solar radiation; therefore more cooling is required in places where there is a lot of radiation. There are several systems that are well known amongst the solar scientific community, but it is difficult to find experimental data for them.
This paper includes experimental performance data for the Rotartica absorption unit, as a cooling and heating system. The Rotartica unit is already available on the market, and could provide a complete solar powered solution.
The performance results presented have been obtained from an installation supported by IDEA (Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía). Three different solar collector fields supply the activation heat to three Rotartica units, used to provide heat to Rotartica’s offices. The overall installation works as heat pump in winter and as a cooling unit in summer. The installation is located in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain, where the climate is Atlantic.
