Performance analysis of integrated solar-assisted heat pumps for water heating

Collana: CA - 61 - Perugia 2006

Note:
A comparison is presented among a solar assisted heat pump (ISAHP) and two traditional plants (flat solar panel and electrical heat pump) for low temperature (around 45 °C) water heating applications. The comparison is performed assuming these devices are energy integrated by means of usual gas burner to assure the typical heat duty of a four-member family.
Available numerical models of the systems have been used to calculate the main performance parameters as functions of actual climatic conditions and simulated stochastic user demand.
Calculations prove that the ISAHP system, even if with a bare panel with half the surface than the traditional flat plate collector, can give the same performance and work with a panel temperature very close to the ambient one. This last feature
leads to high panel efficiency especially in the cold season. Further advantages are expected when the needed working temperatures are higher (60 °C for heating purposes or even 80 °C for cooling systems coupled to absorption refrigerators).
