Optical investigation of combustion instabilities in gas turbine burners

Note:
In this paper a new optical instrument called ODC, useful for diagnostic of combustion instabilities, is presented and tasted on two premixed burners, a 2kW gaseous-fuel burner and a 250 kW liquid-fuel burner. Moreover, it is shown how ODC can characterise the operating mode of the burner, stable or unstable: the sampled flame brightness signal can be used to foresee yhe onset of thermo-acoustic instabilities prior to reaching a critical state, namely, when self-excited oscillations are established inside the combustor.
