Development work at NTUA in recent years includes a substantial amount of work in the field of design and optimisation of rotating components found in various applications including that of microturbines. The methods used for the design of small radial compressors and turbines, as well as axial-flow turbines is presented and discussed. Indicative calculation results are given for each of these components. In addition to that, a number of components that were designed at NTUA were manufactured and tested. Experimental results for a small radial compressor, a mixed-flow turbine and two-stage axial-flow turbine are presented. The experimential results confirm the improvement of efficiency that is possible and the reasons underlying them are outlined.
