Note:
The objective of this paper is to present the results of an experimental investigation into the performance of alternative types of variable speed refrigeration compressors under constant and floating head pressure conditions. The investigations involved an open type reciprocating compressor, an open type rotary-vane compressor and a semi-hermetic reciprocating compressor. The results of power consumption, cooling capacity, cooling COP and oil circulation are presented to offer a better understanding the effects of variable speed refrigeration system operation. The study indicates that the oil concentration significantly influences the COP of the rotary compressor in addition to causing increased discharge gas superheat. The COP of all compressors improved significantly with floating head pressure control, particularly at low speeds and low loads. The performance characteristics of the open type reciprocating compressor were found to be more favourable for variable speed capacity control compared to those of the semihermetic reciprocating and rotary compressor.
