The orbital displacer - implications and applications

Pubblicazione

Note:
The significance of the orbital displacer may well extend well beyond its applications as the basis of a four stroke internal combustion engine. For example its inherently high swept volume/total volume can be furth increased by combining the original orbital displacer with an everted orbital displacer to form a hybrid orbital displacer with an even high swept volume/total volume ratio. Furthermore the orbital motion of the piston can be used to open and close ports to produce any desired timing with the same freguency as that of the orbiting piston. This paper also considers the support and balancing of the vanes, stabilisation and cooling of the orbiting piston, sealing of the orbital working chamber, its volume as a function of crank angle, and the minimum geometrically necessary clearance volume. The paper also describes the application of the orbital displacer to four stroke engines, two stroke engines, hydraulic pumps and motors, pneumatic compressors and motors and vacuum pumps and Rankine (ie steam engines).
