Note:
Co-firing applied to the energy use biomass aims at implementing biomass sources in an existing coal power plant. This technology allows to optimize the aspects of both, the environmental benefits of biomass and the low-cost of coal.
This paper focuses on the technical aspects of an efficient co-firing coal/biomass power plant and its environmental improvement in comparison with traditional coal power plants. In particular it underlines all the requirements allowing an existing coal plant to be retrofitted with a biomass plant. All these elements are also considered by the economic point of view in order to obtain a cost/benefits analysis of co-firing depending on carbon and biomass prices. Despite of some technical problems related to the use of inhomogeneous materials, solid waste coal co-firing can be a valid solution to reduce landfill problems and to produce a certain renewable energy share, helping to fit with Kyoto goals. Economical considerations dealing with plant sizing will be exposed in this study to formulate a mathematical equation summerizing all main aspects of an existing coal plant, to calculate the optimum biomass/coal substitution rate. A conclusive sensibility analysis will show up the influence of most effective parameters on results, such as biomass collecting density, coal and biomass price, governmental support, atc.
